Critic Reviews
96 points, Decanter
“Thibault Liger-Belair has produced one of the tighter, more severe expressions of this celebrated Premier Cru in 2018, finding texture, tannin, and structure in his 74-year-old plantings. Hail halved the crop here, which may have been a bonus as far as quality was concerned because this has natural poise, balance, and intensity with spice and tobacco notes and underlying minerality. Drinking window 2026-2036”

“The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a superb bouquet of brambly red fruit, quite ferrous in style, displaying hints of dried blood and meat juices. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, quite firm in the mouth and very saline, though it is closed on the finish. Nevertheless, this has great potential.”

“The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru contains 45% whole cluster, a little more than last year. The bouquet features raspberry preserve, white pepper and bay leaf. The palate is balanced with good body thanks to a little more punching down during vinification. Very well defined and quite saline in the mouth, with an elegant, confit-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth, leaving cassis notes and marmalade on the aftertaste. Excellent.”

“Volume reduced by the hail, down by 50%. Planted 1944 and 1946 but with substantial replacement of missing vines after 2009. Rich crimson, clear-cut nose, extra pure fruit, magical density. Spicy, excellent whole bunch component (40%) with terrific density. For the moment, there are slightly dry tannins, but this is heading in the right direction.”

About The Winery
The Liger-Belair family has passed down the tradition of winemaking from generation to generation for the past 250 years. In 2001, Thibault Liger-Belair took over the vines as the winemaker and created Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair. Prior to joining the family domaine, Thibault studied viticulture and oenology for six years, and worked for a communications firm in Paris where he was able to present and taste wines internationally. In his mid-twenties, Thibault also started an internet company with the idea of discovering and selling high quality wines. But the calling of the vines was still strong, so in 2001, at the age of 26, Thibault decided to jump to the other side of the fence, this time to make wine, his true calling and passion. The year 2002 was the first harvest of the Nuits-Saint-Georges, Nuits-Saint-Georges Charmottes, as well as Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas. In 2003, the domaine enriched its range with Richebourg Grand Cru, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Petits Monts, and Bourgogne Rouge. In 2009, the domaine expanded into Beaujolais, and now a Beaujolais-Villages and several Moulin-à-Vent Cru wines are also produced.
