“Whoa! this is a knockout wine, even better than last year’s, it is rich, aromatic and complex; dense and layered, showing ripe citrus fruit, minerals and bright acidity; this winery, on the slopes of Mt. Etna in Sicily, has become star in a short time; the proprietor is Silvia Maestrelli, a Florentine woman.”

“The 2018 Etna Bianco A’Puddara lifts up with a dazzling display of dusty dried flowers, lemon confit, hints of gingery spice and almond. It’s silkytextured and rich, with a sweet display of ripe apples and melon balanced by a twang of lime and kiwi toward the close. Tension remains high as the A’Puddara tapers off with cheek-puckering freshness and a flourish of salty minerality. A bit of cellaring is recommended to allow this Carricante to blossom aromatically. The A’Puddara refines on the lees in neutral 3,500-liter French oak barrels for eight months. I love the sweet and sour contrasts here, and it is packed full of so much character.”

“The Tenuta di Fessina 2018 Etna Bianco A’ Puddara is a pure expression of Carricante with a laser focus and pinpoint aromas of white melon, crushed stone, and orchard fruit. True to the grape, the wine is sharp on the palate with a zesty, clean, and snappy style. There is lovely minerality and balanced acidity on the close too, making a nice match for grilled scallops in a creamy sauce. This wine has made an impressive jump forward in brightness and purity in this vintage.”
About The Winery
In 2007, Silvia Maestrelli founded Tenuta di Fessina in the village of Rovittello on the northeastern side of Mt. Etna. They have 17 acres of vineyards in Rovittello (2,200 feet) and 6 acres between Milo and Santa Maria di Licodìa (3,280 feet). These vineyards are located on different sides of the mountain in order to produce the best expressions of the indigenous varietals. There has also been a strong focus on hospitality: Seven rooms for guests were built inside a 17th century structure on the property. In collaboration with winemaker Federico Curtaz, Maestrelli has created one of the most successful and recognizable cellars in the Etna area and has become an exemplary ambassador of new Sicilian viticulture.
