“Looks like Hamilton Russell has some serious competition in the South Africa Chardonnay department from Marc Kent’s off-shoot of his Boekenhoutskloof operation; this is racy and lush with creamy vanilla, toasty oak and generous citrus, it has smooth texture and lovely balance with a fruit-forward style that is thoroughly modern.”

“Made by Gottfried Mocke of Boekenhoutskloof, but sold under its own label, this stylish Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Chardonnay is made with fruit that used to go into Sumaridge. Marrying barreland concrete-fermented and aged portions, it has jasmine and hawthorn aromas, pear and citrus fruit and very subtle wood spices. 2020-25.”

“The 2018 Chardonnay sashays out of the glass with seductive and elegant oak tones of vanilla, caramel madeleines and crème brûlée with elements of baked Golden Delicious apples, juicy Bosc pear and lemon pastry cream, with layered floral and mineral notes throughout. Medium-bodied and with 13.5% alcohol, the wine is immaculately balanced, with succulent acidity, a juicy and rich mouthfeel and a soft mineral tension with nutty and leesy characteristics. Concluding with a long, drawn-out finish, this is absolutely delicious and is an instant success. Bravo.”

“This starts off surprisingly light in intensity on the nose, with faint hints of freshly dried straw, fresh apple slices and a touch of orange rind. The palate starts off with more of the same and is light upon entry, but then unveils a rounder midpalate and a creamy mouthfeel around flavors of creamed pear and baked apple that carry through to the close.”

“Quite rich yet with that streak of briny acidity typical of this part of the world. Passion- and kiwi-fruit notes. Wait for more bottle development, I suggest…”
About The Winery
Marc Kent is the owner, chief winemaker, and driving force behind Cap Maritime. Marc has always considered the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley as one of the most exciting places to grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in South Africa, and with Cap Maritime, Boekenhoutskloof has created wines that capture the essence of their origin, while at the same time representing a style of wine to which the winery aspires. A maverick spirit, he is unafraid to experiment with the unconventional, but his principal commitment is to quality on every level and in every detail. Marc is also the owner of Boekenhoutskloof, The Chocolate Block, Porcupine Ridge, The Wolftrap, and Helderberg Winery.
