“It’s always interesting to compare this with the similarly named Clos des Epeneaux from Domaine Comte Armand, which is silkier and more open-knit. This is another wine that makes no concessions to youthful drinkability, but will age well based on the evidence of previous vintages. Yes, it’s tannic and chewy, but the fruit beneath the carapace is rich, vibrant and alive. 2028-40”

“Bright ruby-red. Deep, ripe aromas of black cherry and chocolatey oak, plus a high-toned whiff of sherry. Then large-scaled and aromatic in the mouth, conveying stronger terroir personality than the foregoing wines. Complex and fine-grained, with a positive trace of bracing bitterness. Chewy, chocolatey, well-integrated tannins take over the entire mouth on the back end. This nuanced, fine-grained wine finishes with a trace of dried herbs and has the structure to age. The yield here was just eight hectoliters per hectare, according to estate manager Yves Confuron.”

“The 2016 Pommard Les Vaumuriens unfurls in the glass with aromas of pencil lead, cassis, rich spices and cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with a broad, fleshy attack, an ample chassis of chewy, powdery stem tannins and a long finish. In the contemporary Courcel style, this is very much built for the cellar, but the intensity and concentration of fruit should win out with time.”
About The Winery
The Domaine de Courcel is a 400-year-old family-owned winery located in the village of Pommard in the Côte d'Or. Its current owners, three sisters and one brother, are the descendants of the founders. Gilles de Courcel provides leadership for the domaine, the estate is managed by Anne Bommelaer and Marie de Courcel, and Yves Confuron has served as the winemaker since 1996. Its prestigious Pommard Premier Crus include Le Grand Clos des Épenots, Les Rugiens, Les Frémiers, and Les Croix Noires. Tradition, modernism, and excellence are the pillars of this domaine.
