About the Wine
The Rugiens (1.07 ha) are located mid-hill on the southern slopes, in between Pommard and Volnay. The ground, where both marlstone and clay can be found, is composed of a wide variety of soil. The superior part of the plot has a light (0.2m) soil of marlstone while the inferior part is reddish-brown and deeper (0.8-1m). The land is east facing. The vines are all around 60 years of age.
Very bright and elegant style of wine. It has rich, fruit flavors, sweet spices such as cloves and its natural refined tannins give it punch and drive. An aerial and delicately structured wine with great aging potential.

“This hails from a large (1.07 hectares), old vine parcel with soils ranging from marl at the top to deep, red clay at the bottom. The result is the structure expected of Rugiens with more perfumed flair. Smelling of garden blooms, cherries and balsamic, there is also a reverberating minerality that pushes into the vigorous finish.”

“This is aromatically similar to the Epenots though the fruit is perhaps just a bit cooler. The more mineral-driven and precise flavors flash focused power on the muscular, sappy and balanced finish that goes on and on. This too possesses excellent delineation and is a wine that is sufficiently compact to require every bit of a decade to become more approachable. In a word, impressive.”
